How to make beet root hummus from scratch | beet root hummus





Beetroot hummus is a variation of hummus,where in regular hummus is blended with beetroot .I already have a classic hummus recipe on the blog. Addition of beetroot apart from lending bright red colour to the hummus increases its nutritive value too.Beet root has become my new favourite among veggies .

It's deep red colour never fails to amuse me .Except Lil Z we three of us are really comfortable with this veggie in any form .Other Beetroot recipe on the blog are beetroot stir fry and beetroot smoothie.Beet root is a power house of nutrients .It lowers blood pressure,a great detox for liver and blood,besides having anti inflammatory,anti cancer properties.




You can either steam /boil/pressure cook  beetroot.But I prefer steaming as it maintains the nutritive value of beetroot .Beetroot hummus can be paired with any flat bread or can be served as a dip with appetisers .





Qatar celebrated its national day on 18 December ,I had planned this recipe for that day but as usual I am the worst in planning or scheduling .School was declared holiday in lieu with the national day and the celebrations began at  home from Thursday .This time we were lucky enough to witness the national day parade at the corniche .Thanks to the pestering of the kids .

A star studded event, with all the dignitaries and the high profile ministers accompanied the Emir His highness Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the father emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani .The joy of the kids knew no bounds to see the king in his live avatar . Little one while returning back home was rejoicing the moment ,"Mom, today I have seen the king of Qatar,I will never forget this day .But mom next year we are going to sit a bit more nearer to the Dias ,I want to shake hands with the king ".Kids are kids , he has planned for the next national day already. 

But better late than never ,let's check out the process to make an easy and nutritious Beetroot hummus


Ingredients for beet root hummus

  • 1 cup chick peas(dried)
  • 1 cup  beet root 
  • 1/2 lime/lemon
  • 1/4 cup Tahini(click the link)
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp chilly flakes
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  •  salt to taste 




Procedure for beetroot hummus

1.Soak chickpeas over night in water .Next day morning to a pressure cooker add the chickpeas, 2 cups waterand 1 tsp salt pressure cook on high for 1 whistle and 5 whistles on medium flame .Allow the pressure to leave on its self .Drain the chickpeas in a colander .

2.While the chickpeas are cooking you can steam the beet root .Peel and chop the beetroot ,steam it in a steamer or place a colander over a sauce pan of water ,place the chopped beetroot in it and close a lid .cook  until soft.    



3.To a food processor or a blender add all the ingredients listed and blend it to a fine puree.If needed add some water while grinding.



4. Your beet root hummus is ready to be served .Drizzle it with some olive oil and  serve it as a dip with your choice of flat breads.
