South Indian food is incomplete with out the mention of chutneys ,and pickles.Be it from hot, sour,sour and sweet ....you just start naming it and there seems to be no end to the variations of chutneys .South Indian breakfast generally starts on a savoury note .
Idlis, dosa, uttappam ......all are paired with chutneys and sambar of course. So today's post is a simple yet tasty Peanut and roasted gram chutney that goes well with idly or dosa .I had served it with ragi dosa.This chutney even goes well with Meduvada.
Every south Indian house hold has its own recipe of chutneys .This is my granny's recipe which till today I follow .
This is a blitz and serve chutney if the ingredients are ready .

INGREDIENTS
- 100 gms /8 tbsp roasted peanuts(SEE TIPS BELOW)
- 30 gms /4 tbsp roasted gram
- 3-4 Green chillies
- 3 inch piece tamarind
- a few strand coriander leaves
FOR TEMPERING
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/4 cumin seeds
- 2 tbsp oil
- Few curry leaves
PROCEDURE
- To the smallest jar of the blender or mixer add all the ingredients and grind it.
- Do not add water and blend it to a powder .
- Now add a little water and grind it to a paste.
- Transfer to a serving bowl and add water according to the desired consistency .
- T o a tadka pan add oil ,when it starts smoking add mustard seeds , followed by cumin,as it splutters add curry leaves .
- Pour it over the chutney .
- Serve it with idly or dosa.
TIPS
- To roast peanuts ,place them on a tava or griddle and roast until the skin colour changes to light brown.Remove in a plate and cool it for a while ,dehusk it by rubbing with your hand against the peanuts.
That's a nice and rich chutney...
